Plot |
"In the Bedroom" tells a dark story of love and loss. 18-year old Frank Fowler (Nick Stahl) falls in love with an older divorcee Natalie (Marisa Tomei), to the disapproval of his parents Matt (Tom Wilkinson) and Ruth (Sissy Spacek) Frank's talk of skipping college and working as a fisherman in his little New England town only contribute to their concern. Concern turns to despair when Natalie's ex-husband kills Frank in a classic domestic confrontation: ex-husband confronts wife, encounters new boyfriend, violence ensues. Matt and Ruth are heartbroken, but their confusion and turns to anger and is stoked as the legal process seems intent on letting Frank's killer go free. The movie takes an unexpected turn into noir when Frank's straitlaced, middle-class parents make an unexpected decision. No happy Hollywood ending here, as the viewer is left to wonder what the rest of their lives will be like carrying the weight of their son's death, along with a secret they will never be able to reveal. |
